English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English as an additional language (EAL) is a program designed to support newly arrived students and students whose home language is not English in the initial stages of their education in Australia.

The learning needs of the EAL learner vary, therefore, the program which runs at John Fawkner College is designed to develop literacy in English and new cultural understanding in both the educational and wider community. EAL students are supported during their English language lessons, where they are taken as a group by an EAL specialist, who follows the relevant curriculum, as stipulated by the Victorian Curriculum.

For senior year students, an EAL program is incorporated into the mainstream English classes. The course follows the VCAA EAL study design, which complements the English course.

 

Instrumental Music Tuition

John Fawkner College, together with Whittlesea Music School, is offering your children the opportunity to learn an instrument here at the school campus.

Learning a musical instrument is a great way to broaden your horizons, learn new skills, develop confidence, and interact with other students in a creative and enjoyable environment.

Lunchtime Activities

Additional to our expanding curriculum offerings, the College offers a diverse range of lunchtime extra-curricular activities. These activities have been developed in partnership between teaching staff and students to maximise engagement and promote our school vision and enjoyment in learning.

Each term there is a range of activities that can include:

• Homework Club
• Library Club
• Music and Drama Club
• Camp Organisation
  – eg. Ski Camp
• Year Level Futsal Competition
• Basketball Competitions
• Interschool Sport Training
• Table Tennis
• Robotics and ICT Workshops
• Photography Club

 

Homework Club

John Fawkner has a structured homework program at every year level that promotes the high expectations of the College. Our homework policy also reflect current research on senior secondary education.

As a result, we have set up a regular homework club to assist those students or families who would like some extra support to complete homework tasks.

Homework club is a great program that enables students to gain valuable help and support of University tutors from Embrace Education, JFC teachers and other students.
Students are able to finish off any school work or homework assigned by their teachers as well as studying for upcoming tests or exams.

The program runs in the college library every Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 3:15 – 4:15pm.
